I did a study of fire escapes in four cities: New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and Chicago; and I am still taken with their beauty and inherent symmetry. They will probably be all gone from our cities within the next fifty years, with only a few holdouts surviving the urban renewal and new fire regulations around the states. So notice them while they are still here.
